Creating and Consuming


Hello everyone. :)

Recently, I have contemplated the differences between being a consumer or a creator.

A consumer enjoys goods, services, etc. and this is all well and good. The economy functions when people buy the things and pay for the services that they need and/or want. However, if all we do is "consume" then we don't reach our full potentials of intelligence. We are content to do less, or hardly any, thinking and planning.

 Lots of educated people would hardly be able to survive if it weren't for the farmers, construction workers, plumbers, factory workers,  etc. who supply the goods, buildings and services which they depend on. A snooty, condescending attitude is not a reasonable one. Gratitude is constantly in order. On the other hand, people who are excellent at practical work may be sorely lacking when it comes to deep, analytical thought, refinement and courtesy. There are people who are thinking, refined and courteous who are holding responsible positions in institutions that provide services that the unrefined are benefiting from. A snooty, condescending attitude is not a reasonable one. Gratitude is constantly in order.



A creator is a supplier. A creator knows why a certain thing is what it is. He or she studies and goes through trial and error until he or she understand how to make a certain thing work well. A person who loves to eat knows which foods taste good, but a chef knows why certain foods taste good and how to make them taste good. A person who buys beautiful nature photography knows that the pictures are stunning, but a nature photographer knows how to create stunning shots. A person who has an eye for good quality clothing knows what to look for, but a good seamstress knows how to create good quality clothing. A music lover knows which musical sounds are pleasing, but musicians, singers, and musical composer have understandings of what makes music pleasing and/or how to make music sound pleasing.

In closing, here is my appeal: let us be balanced people. Let us be be both consumers and creators, but let us spend more time learning to create than we spend learning to consume. God made us beings who are meant to learn, grow and share. Let us grow, by His grace and through His strength, into the well balanced and symmetrical people He intends for us to be. I hope that this article has been inspiring to someone. :)
